“NEW FRONTIERS IN STRATEGY” BY STEPHAN REGAN

Disc 1 - The new economics of Business Strategy

The reason for this masterclass
The Cranfield Brand
Case Study : Railtrack
Most Admired Companies
The “Old Model”
The “New Model”
The future of MBA

Disc 2 - Masterclasss : DE BEERS

Price : GBP $50.00

As part of the Scholarship Award event each year we have established a Masterclass programme. Our aim is to professionally record these with the aim of making them available to the wider alumni community internationally - both to enable alumni to access the latest in Cranfield teachings - as well as to raise funds to fund the Masterclass filming and support our scholarship fund raising activities.

For those of you who pre-date Stephan’s time at Cranfield, he is considered to be an outstanding lecturer - “a God” was the way one Sydney Alumni described him to me.

There are two DVD’s - each about 40 minutes.

The first DVD covers the evolution of strategy from the fomulaic models of the 80’s based on Porter, through to a more complex view of strategy as an interaction between the basic drivers of the industry, what the customer opportunity is and where the enterprise’s talents lie. These are illustrated with Case Examples of where the businesses got it very right - and badly and sadly wrong.

The second DVD focusses on a De Beers case study. Stephan also discusses Cranfield’s influential role in the evolution of strategy development, as well as spicing things up, in a very low key conversational way, with fond but dry digs at: Gerry Johnson, Malcolm Macdonald, McKinseys and more.

The DVD’s have been professionally filmed and produced so they are both entertaining and informative and at 40 minutes each, an evening’s education.

All profits from sales go into our scholarship fund and help us to continue our efforts to increase the number of talented Australians who can benefit from the Cranfield MBA experience.

We hope you will order the the DVDs and both benefit from the high quality content as well as supporting our scholarship activities.

SALARY SURVEYS

Taking on an MBA is a big decision.

This survey www.som.cranfield.ac.uk/som/careers/mbacareerpathsreport2006.pdf shows what is possible.
Of course, seeing salary figures in a survey like this does, of course, not guarantee that you will earn those figures yourself. It is all about you and how you handle yourself with the employers that you target.

HOW TO FUND THE MBA

The usual methods apply: Personal Savings, Borrowings and Sponsorships. Our view is you should first decide to do an MBA. Then you should decide which universities you would consider studying at. To give yourself the best chance, you’ll probably want to look at Overseas and Australian MBAs.

Find out what the entry requirements are and consider how well you meet those requirements. That will entail talking to past MBAs from various school, work colleagues (with and without an MBA), careers advisors, your managers and the like, as well as going to open days and doing the GMAT test. Assuming that you believe that you stand a reasonable chance of winning a place then figure out how you will fund the study. You should take into account that the cost will not just be the fees. You will have to factor in accommodation, food, travel and of course books.

Choose the most appropriate sources of finance to match your circumstances.

Remember to look at the Cranfield Sponsorships that are available. Have a good look at the Cranfield Australian Alumni Scholarship worth A$90,000.

We are seeking a person who has the age, talent and track record of success to date, and who is passionate about Australia and wants to make a contribution to it in the future.

Use this page to persuade the selection committee that you are that person.

What happens if you are offered a place by Cranfield, but do not win the scholarship?

You may be eligible for a Fee Share scholarship (basically a reduction on the full time course fees). These are awarded by Cranfield at their discretion to applicants who impress them during the interview process.

Otherwise, you may wish to take up the place at your own cost. We are happy to provide advice and support wherever we can.

PAUL H MASON (Full-time MBA 2002)
Director, Partnerships – ANZ

What was I doing when I decided to do the MBA
Prevaricating about doing an MBA! Throughout my 20s I had been thinking about doing an MBA but at 32 took the decision it was now or never – so I applied, and the rest as they say….

Career wise, I had been in banking 10 years working in Europe, Asia and the Middle East across a number of different areas. I had though reached a point where I wanted to broaden my learning and experience, and open my mind to the business world beyond banking.

Why I chose Cranfield
It was actually a very easy decision. I looked at INSEAD (France) and LBS (UK) but felt that Cranfield better served me as someone who already had 10 years work experience. Also, its strong reputation, course structure and emphasis on personal development were compelling.

What I got out of it
For me, the Cranfield MBA really is an experience rather than simply a qualification. So, yes I have the useful three letters, but more importantly the year broadened my horizons and experience, enhanced my functional skills, helped me learn about myself as a team member and a leader, and allowed me to meet in a unique environment a great set of people.

The year is not without its stresses, tensions and frustrations, but for me it was a unique year, one of the most enjoyable and developmental of my life.

STEPHEN WOOD (Exec MBA 1994)
Founder & Director – Success Enterprises Consulting Pty Ltd

What was I doing when I decided to do the MBA
As a 27 year old, I was working for Ford Motor Company as a Manufacturing Engineer at a car components factory in London, England. I found I was more interested in people, projects and money than the engineering content itself.

Why I chose Cranfield
I looked at applications for INSEAD (France), Harvard (USA) and Warwick (UK), but in the end chose Cranfield, because it has a great reputation, offered the best course for me at a price I could afford to pay and was relatively close to where I lived.

What I got out of it
The MBA enabled me to move out of engineering into the commercial side of the business and to win a series of promotions and pay rises.

My MBA skills then helped me to change companies, negotiate a 50% pay rise, and move into a Corporate Strategy Manager role working on Strategy and M&A work.

Later, the people and high level business skills gained from the MBA were invaluable in setting up my own Strategy Consulting Business. I ended up having more control, more spare time, and in my second year of business, take home more money than when I was a highly paid employee.

At Cranfield I made some great friends. We are still in contact today, and still rely on each other for objective help and guidance.

Emigrating to Australia from the UK in 2005, I have found that the Australian Alumni Association has made me very welcome – it is good to be mixing with so many like minded, talented people!

GRAHAM BAWS (MBA 1979)
Principal: Mosaic Management & Financial Services

What was I doing when I decided to do the MBA
I was working in Port Hedland, in the far north of Western Australia, for an American company. We produced salt by the solar evaporation of sea water and it was far cry from my working life as a chartered accountant in London eighteen months earlier. After six years in Port Hedland, the final three as General Manager, I was convinced I needed to take formal studies in management!

Why I chose Cranfield
Even without the internet I was able to research business schools of choice, and Cranfield stood out in several respects; its reputation and one year MBA programme being two important factors.

What I got out of it
In terms of benefit, it’s in the mind. It gave me the confidence to take on a number of GM roles and eventually start and grow my own business which we (with my wife) ran for eleven years until we sold it three years ago. Now I consult to a portfolio of small and medium businesses on a wide range of issues, oftentimes calling on the principles I remember from my year at Cranfield. One wish for the future is to have Cranfield and its MBAs continue on a life-long programme of learning.

MIKE SPARK (MBA 1976)

Discipline Leader – Marketing, Swinburne University of Technology

What was I doing when I decided to do the MBA?
In 1975, I was 30, single and in need of a change.

Why I chose Cranfield
I went to Cranfield after I heard about it from a friend who was undertaking a Masters there. It seemed a great environment in which to study and see some of the UK. The one-year MBA sold itself to me because only one year of salary was foregone.

What I got out of it
The MBA enabled me to move successfully from sales into business development/marketing when I returned to my former employer in Australia and then enabled me to start my own Marketing/management consultancy a decade later. The Masters qualification then allowed me to undertake university teaching from the early 90s to the present.

The knowledge and insights gained while studying the MBA have greatly enhanced my business and personal life. Studying solidly in syndicate groups for a year, with students from all over the world broadened my business and international outlook and my interpersonal skills tremendously. I’d do it all again if I could! The year spent studying still ranks as one of the best of my life!

COLIN SQUIRES (MBA 1976)

What was I doing when I decided to do the MBA?
I was in London in 1975 working as a contract engineer designing a mine in Australia when the development was aborted due to economic/political events. I decided then to do an MBA to move my career closer to the heart of the decision making process in business.

Why I chose Cranfield
I did the research and Cranfield fitted the bill; one year, concentrated. My wife and I lived on campus and she helped support the year by working in the library.

What I got out of it
I returned to Australia in 1976 and joined (the predecessor of) Macquarie Bank in corporate finance. Twenty years later I left investment banking as a director of UBS having advised some of Australia’s biggest companies on their major transactions through the 80’s and 90’s. Since then I have embarked on a career as a non-executive director.

Cranfield opened my eyes to the world of business and facilitated my move from engineering into corporate finance at a level I could not previously have imagined.

JOHN MCFARLANE(MBA 1975)
Former CEO, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group
Inaugural Cranfield Distinguished Alumnus Awardee

What was I doing when I decided to do the MBA?
Having graduated from Edinburgh University 5 years earlier, I had spent 5 years with Ford in UK in manufacturing. I wanted to move into Finance or Marketing and felt that an MBA would be the best way of doing this. Unlike in the US, in those days the MBA was less recognised than an accounting qualification, and it felt somewhat pioneering.

Why I chose Cranfield
Although the US was more attractive, cost drove the decision to study in the UK. I applied to LBS, MBS and Cranfield and was accepted by all. I chose Cranfield as it seemed the most pragmatic, and was 12 full months rather than two academic years. Interestingly when I joined Citibank on graduating in 1975, they sent me to the London Business School just to make sure. It is easier the second time round.

What I got out of it

In essence it allowed me to change career and to move up a gear in career terms. The MBA in those days was more knowledge-building than skill-building, but set me up with the language of business, and a basic understanding of the key disciplines in business. There is no doubt it advanced my career and, of course my income, and was a great foundation for things to come. I was later on Cranfield’s Advisory Board for some years while it existed, and have remained in touch over the past 32 years, lecturing there on occasion.

DAVID CORKINDALE (MBA 1965)
Professor of Marketing Management
The University of South Australia, Adelaide.

What was I doing when I decided to do the MBA?
I had been working in a pharmaceutical company, in the early sixties, in a small department that did special projects for the general manager. I came to the belief that there would be great scope in the world for people who could employ ‘scientific management’.

Why I chose Cranfield
I looked around and Cranfield seemed ideal as it seemed to be working with and for industry and commerce and I gained a grant from Cranfield to do the Operational Research course there and subsequently discovered that the MBA course was just beginning.

What I got out of it
I was then fortunate enough to be able to do much of it. The Cranfield experience enabled me to gain a couple of wonderful jobs as an internal management consultant, first in the engineering industry and then in the advertising agency business in London. Some years later I returned as a member of the staff of the School and was able to give something back and contribute to another generation of MBA students, during my time there.

Your life at Cranfield

Cranfield is a friendly and fun place with a real community spirit. Students and faculty mix informally. Whatever your recreational, social or sporting passion, you will find a wide range of opportunities at Cranfield and in the surrounding areas.

However, terms 1 and 2 (from September to Easter) are so demanding that most students do nothing but work with their study groups. And it gets dark at 4pm anyway. However, spring arrives about the same time that you finally learn to get the workload under control and then there is time and spring weather to spend on a few leisure activities.

The Course

The course has been excellent. It’s certainly challenging, and I’ve not had any problem filling the days, but the content and teaching style has been even better than I was expecting.

There is a lot of team work. This of course presents its challenges, but grows a very strong collegial spirit.

Funding

In terms of funding, we’ve budgeted around £1,000 per month in addition to accommodation at £430 per month plus utilities. Obviously it’s not a year for lavish lifestyle, but it looks like we will be well inside budget by year end. I’d recommend people get a car. We didn’t at first, but bought one just before Christmas, and have found the freedom it affords great. Cranfield is quite isolated, and while the bus services are more than adequate, having your own transport really makes a difference. We spent £500 which bought a higher-mileage, but sound run-around. A friend bought quite a nice VW Golf for £1,000. There are a few dealers around, and we bought ours through a friend-of-a-friend on campus.

Life on Campus with a child

So far as life with a child goes, our experience has been really positive. We flew via the USA to get our maximum baggage allowance, and came straight through rather than having the hassle of organising a stopover with our then 11-month old. The flight was fine. There is a doctor on campus, and medical care is free. There is also a dentist, I think students are free, but families pay.

Talia is only just now getting old enough to use day-care, so it’s not something we’ve had experience of. I’ve a friend whose daughter is in the local primary school, and he is very positive about the education she is receiving. Distance from grandparents is a downside. We mitigate this through a phone deal that lets us call home as often as we like, and we make and send DVDs for grandparents. Babysitting was more difficult at first because, we’d lost our trusted networks, but we quickly made friends who’ve been happy to help. We also tend to take Talia out with us to social events on campus. Because of the workload on the course Amanda has ended up taking the lead role in caring for Talia.

David Ryan had been quite up-front about the fact that I’d see more of my learning team than my family, and we came with our eyes open. This is something that any couple considering the course needs to have realistic expectations about. To sum things up, bringing Talia to Cranfield has meant that she has spent a year (or will have by the time we leave) growing up surrounded by an absolutely international bunch of incredibly bright and creative people. In our view this is incredibly positive.

Accomodation

We rent a 2 bedroom house on campus, and would absolutely recommend this as an option. The flexibility it affords around working hours and team meetings is great.

The house is not so large, and is a bit older, but is perfectly fine, and with double glazing and central heating, comfortable.

We budget around £1000 per month living expenses (excluding rent) for the three of us. So far this has comfortably covered setting up house – to a fairly basic standard admittedly, my books, buying and insuring a cheap car, and all food and sundries. This means we’ve covered a few heavy one offs, and remain on budget.

My colleagues have been great with Talia, our daughter. We bring her along to social events, and people seem to quite genuinely enjoy having her around. Quite a few have children of their own too, and many more nieces and nephews they miss.

Amanda, my wife has been at home with Talia. She’s made some good friends here – the majority of the stay at home parents are women though.

JOHN MIOCEVICH (2007 Scholarship Finalist - Australia)

First Week at Cranfield

The first week here has been pretty full on and amazing. First, the MBA group is made up of about 140 people from 36 countries, aged between 25 and 45. Meeting the people and getting to know them has been a fantastic experience in itself.

Working with people from such different backgrounds has been a challenge but also a great learning experience. In our study group we have two Indians, a Romanian, a Nigerian, an Englishman and me.

Everyone in the MBA group has been very friendly though. The first week, orientation, was designed to get us working and playing sport together and telling each other about our home countries and cultures. It has worked very well and our whole stream (one of three groups which the MBA group is broken into) has gelled immediately. I really feel like I’ve made over 40 great friends in the first week. It may be that we are all away from home and out of our comfort zones that we have bonded so quickly.

Life as a Social Organiser

I have been elected one of six ‘Social Organisers’ for the whole MBA group (two from each stream) – its our job to organise parties, social events, outgoings, drinks, etc for everyone to ensure that the year is not just about study and that we all have fun as well. I’m really looking forward to the challenge and the experience of working with the other 5 who are all very switched on. Being an organiser and a contact point is also a great way to get to know the people in the group and the faculty. I’m not sure how I am going to handle the pace of work, managing events and late nights required in the role on top of the study course. I’m pretty tired after one week but it is great fun being involved.

The problem here is that everyone is smart, capable, driven and used to being in charge so working in groups is sometimes difficult. It’s very much a case of too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

Accomodation

The accommodation here is OK - a small very basic one bed room with ensuite. Nothing too flash but nice and clean enough. The food available here is subsidised so its not too expensive. Having said that I think I will lose weight while I am here. We are so busy its been easy for a day to go by without eating.

It has’nt all been work though. On Saturday Sarah, the other Aussie, and I watched the game at the campus pub with a bunch of poms..and don’t think we didn’t get some stick about it afterward. When NZ lost to France the French guys rubbed it in too - not sure how that works but anyway!

Well, thats about all I have time for at the moment. Its Sunday night and I have a thousand things to do.

GMAT Help

The Graduate Management Admission Test is the internationally recognised and standardised test required by most post graduate business schools. You will need to provide a GMAT score to Cranfield for them to process your application.

The GMAT has three main sections,

Quantitative (75 mins)
Problem Solving
Data Sufficiency

Verbal (75 mins)
Sentence Correction
Reading Comprehension
Critical Reasoning

Analytical Writing (60 mins)

There are GMAT testing centers in all states and you can book your test online at http://www.mba.com/mba/takethegmat.

You will need a good GMAT score, in Cranfield’s case over 600, to be considered for a place.
The GMAT test is a test which you can practice for. As you become more comfortable with the different types of question you will be able to complete them faster and with less effort.
It is important to practice, especially if you have not studied for a few years. You will be rusty and it will show!
In fact, beacuse there are so many coaching services for GMAT everyone does tend to study for it. Over the years, this means that the average score increased from around 500 20 years ago to 600 now. Most people find the Verbal Section and Analytical Writing Sections to be the most concern and hence tend to spend their time on these! Especially because the Quantitative Section is based on Year 10 maths.

However geting a good score on the quantitative section can mean the difference between a 600 score (acceptable) and a 660 score (excellent). So spend the time as these are easy additional marks to obtain.

For some reason, Engineers and others who are highly numerate, tend to mess up this section of the GMAT. Over confidence perhaps? So, please do yourself a favour and practise for this section.

See what can winner Sarah Nicholson (a chemical engineer) has to say about the GMAT.

“A few days before my test I tracked down some practice ones on line and thought I’d go through a couple of them. I’ve got an engineering degree so I wasn’t worried about the maths and my arts degree taught me to write essays but my grammar’s never been great so I was mostly concerned about the sentence correction questions. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE GMAT! Turns out my grammar was in the top 10% but my maths marks were horrible. They were asking about stuff I hadn’t touched since high school (and hated then) - probability, permutations, geometry, surds - and you had about 2 minutes per question with no calculator.

GMAT took over my life for the next three days. Once I had revised all my senior maths and worked out the strategy involved in the test I had time for about 5 hours sleep before driving to Sydney. The cram sessions paid off and I came out with a score of 660, the average for Cranfield students.”

Why should I study for an MBA when I am already successful in my career? I deliver results and am judged on my output, not my qualifications.

The Cranfield MBA dramatically increases your skills – it’s not about acquiring letters after your name, rather about how much you will learn in an intensive learning environment from world leading academic staff and your peers—students from all over the world who have real work experience and a track record of success.

Cranfield alumni have gone on to high levels of achievement, either in the corporate world or running their own businesses, e.g. John McFarlane (MBA 1975) formerly CEO ANZ Bank; Martin Dalgliesh (MBA 1997) formerly CEO – New Media, Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd, Miles Flint (MBA 1982) President, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications; Elena Ambrosiadou (1988) the second highest paid woman in the UK after J K Rowling (at GBP13 million!).

The Economist Intelligence Unit 2005 worldwide rankings places Cranfield at No. 32 overall and for “alumni effectiveness” it is ranked 13 in the world. (Monash Business School and Melbourne Business Schools are ranked 59 and 99 on the overall rankings).

Doing the Cranfield MBA will give you the chance to spend 12 months intensively developing yourself and broadening your skill base. It puts you in control of your career, rather than you being dependent on the organisation finding the next challenge for you. Attending Cranfield is about escalating your personal development and playing in a much bigger and demanding pond.

What will I learn that will be useful? I’m not really interested in theory. What I learn needs to be practical and directly relevant. The MBA seems to go over the same ground as my first degree.

The course content is demanding, intense and incredibly interesting. It is not the 101 version. The subject matter is researched and taught by the world ranking experts.

Cranfield covers foundation topics to a rigorous level and then you can specialise in particular themes e.g. innovation, organisational change.

Cranfield don’t just teach the theory, they teach how to implement the theory. It is a practical approach that is achieved through business simulations, company based projects and a crisis management exercise.

Isn’t an MBA really for the “corporate types”? I am doing well in that regard, I’m not sure that I see my career as climbing the corporate ladder in the longer term.

The breadth and intensity of learning from the Cranfield MBA dramatically increases your options – you will acquire the skills to move any where in the organisation, to follow your passion into a new career, or to run your own business and succeed.

Many graduates do change careers. Or go on to head up major organisations. Or set up their own businesses. For people who want to run their own business there is no better place than Cranfield to study – it is a worldwide leader in entrepreneurship and enterprise studies.

Isn’t an MBA the degree you do when you don’t know what you want to do or aren’t bright enough to do anything else?

People who choose to do MBA are intelligent and have decided that a Masters degree in business suits their personal needs for further learning and personal development.

Cranfield takes outstanding people from all over the world. Its current GMAT average score is 660 (the top 13% of the population).

More importantly, Cranfield requires far greater work experience than most other Post-graduate schools.

I don’t have an undergraduate degree

Cranfield also accepts applicants who may lack an undergraduate degree because it assesses on a broader range of criteria than other schools, including your work track record.

If I get a Cranfield MBA will people say “wow”?

The Cranfield Full-Time MBA has a top international reputation and is ranked by the UK’s Financial Times Executive Education Rankings of 2006 as No. 2 in UK, No. 5 in Europe and No.15 in the World. The Economist Intelligence Unit worldwide rankings has Cranfield at No. 32 in the world. (Monash and Melbourne Business Schools are ranked 59 and 99).

Top ranking international companies recruit from Cranfield including McKinsey, Citibank, American Express.

Just the experience of applying for the scholarship will be invaluable – short-listed applicants will experience the ANZ top management screening process. Finalists will get a personal feedback report from an internationally renowned executive search organisation.

I want to learn something satisfying and stimulating and experience new things.

Attending Cranfield also allows you to travel internationally and to experience life in the English countryside.
Cranfield is in the country (Bedfordshire) close enough to Milton Keynes and London to provide the bright lights of civilisation while allowing you to experience the English countryside (decent pubs and a rural lifestyle). The quietness of the countryside intensifies the very demanding environment.
Most people who attend Cranfield will talk about what they got out of it personally.

Can I work overseas?

Cranfield is one of the world’s elite business schools whose MBA graduates automatically qualify for the British government’s Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP). This means that international Cranfield MBA graduates who want to work in the UK will find the process of applying for a work permit faster and simplified.”

I also want to have fun

Whilst the course is demanding, with lots of hard work it’s incredibly rewarding in terms of learning and personal development. People from all over the world become lifelong friends. You get involved in a great social community. Big assignment deadlines are often followed by some memorable parties!

How do I fund the course

The Cranfield Australian Alumni Scholarship will cover all the course fees and make a major contribution to the airfare and living expenses for one (or make a good contribution for those who wish to take partners/ families).

People who apply for the scholarship and don’t win may be eligible for reduced a Fee Share scholarship which reduces the fees payable. This can bring the total amount required for fees and living expense to less than the cost of the full time MBA at AGSM or Melbourne Business school currently $50,000 AUD. Cranfield is ranked above both of these internationally.

ANZ also offers a loan scheme at a very competitive interest rates (read more)

Will I earn more?

Over 90% of Cranfield MBAs have a job within 90 days of completing the course. Most 2005 graduates doubled their salary after leaving Cranfield. Cranfield graduates command some of the highest salaries in Europe for new graduates.

I’m not sure that I can afford to take a year out. It’s a huge investment in time

Cranfield crams the equivalent academic workload load of the two year MBA courses into 12 months. It is a pressure cooker environment which dramatically increases the intensity and quality of the learning.

Will I get left behind by taking time out? Others could overtake me or I could do the course and then just end up in the same place.

What you learn at Cranfield will give you a shot at the jobs which you would never consider and never be considered for at the moment.

The one year compressed course that Cranfield offers is a very time-effective investment. Less time away. Less time without an income. Less time for others to leapfrog you. A one year investment for a 20 year career is good sense.

What about my partner/family?

Accommodation for students with partners and families is obtainable. The social environment at Cranfield is very partner friendly.

How will this make me stand out from the rest?

Cranfield has an international reputation. There are very few Australians who have an MBA from an internationally recognised school. Many outstanding business leaders have attended Cranfield.

The scholarship award event is a high profile business event which will attract major publicity.

Applicants for the scholarship will benefit from the opportunity to network with senior business leaders and top ranking search organisations. The Cranfield Alumni in Australia have unique and personal journeys that typify the benefits of the Cranfield learning experience.

Applicants for the Scholarship will build their profile even if they don’t win.

What if I cannot attend the ‘Meet the Alumni’ session? Will it affect my application?

The ‘Meet the Alumni’ sessions are a wonderful opportunity to meet alumni members and hear about their experience at Cranfield and how their Cranfield MBA has contributed to their careers. It is not compulsory to attend, however, you will benefit personally from the experience.

What is I am over 34yrs of age?

There is no upper age limit to be eligible for the scholarship. The lower age limit is stated as 28 because you do need to have at least 4 years work experience before applying.

I have a young family. Will this weigh against me when applying for the scholarship?

Many students studying at Cranfield have young families. Because of the age group this scholarship is geared for, it would not be a surprise that the recipient has a young family.

Is it possible to attend the “Meet the Alumni’ session if I do not think I am quite ready to apply for the scholarship?

You would be welcome at the ‘Meet the Alumni’ sessions if you think you may like to apply in future years. It will be an opportunity for you to find out what you need to do in the next couple of years before applying.

What should I do if I meet all the criteria but have not had enough work experience?

You need to wait and apply once you do have more than 4 years work experience as this is a major eligibility requirement, however, you are most welcome to attend the ‘Meet the Alumni’ sessions for you to find out what you need to do in the next couple of years before applying.

Am I still eligible if I am an Australian national or Permanent Resident but have been using an overseas base for the past few years?

You need to be a resident in Australia at the time of applying to be eligible for the scholarship.

Can I still apply for the scholarship if I have completed an MBA previously?

The Cranfield MBA is quite a different experience from many other MBA’s . The student population is older with more experience and the course is intensive as it is completed within 1 year rather than the normal 2 years. For this reason, it does not matter if you have previously completed an MBA. You will still gain a lot of new knowledge.

What is the GMAT and how is the score calculated?

Go to GMAT for more information

Does it matter which if I work in a not-for-profit/cultural sector?

The scholarship is designed for future business leaders. It does not matter which sector the business is in. You would be eligible what ever business sector you currently work in.

Can you apply for the scholarship if your undergraduate degree is from a university overseas?

It does not matter where your undergraduate degree is from (in fact, you do not need to have completed an undergraduate degree). What matters is that you are an Australian citizen and reside in Australia when you apply, and you qualify under the other eligibility criteria.

What is the average age and profile of an Cranfield MBA candidate?

The average age is 31 and all students are required to have a significant working history. In other words, they are not recent undergraduates. This means you learn as much from the other students in your year who are from all over the world, as you do from Cranfield staff, who are at the top of their field.
This web page gives additional information so have a browse.

http://www.som.cranfield.ac.uk/som/mba/mbaprogramme/studentprofiles.asp

How long is the GMAT results valid for?

It is valid for 5 years.

Can I resit the exam?

Yes. A maximum of five time per calendar year and you must leave 31 days
between resits.

Despite my plans I can’t now fit the Scholarship in. When will it be run again?

Each year, and the closing date for applications is the first Friday in March. Check the website for details and exact dates.

Would I need to apply separately for a Fee-share scholarship or am I ‘automatically entered’ with my scholarship application?

You automatically get considered for the Fee Share as part of your application.

What documents should be sent to the MBA Admissions Office at Cranfield School of Management?

All applicants should send the following documents to the MBA Admissions Office at Cranfield School of Management:
2 copies of the application forms
2 sealed envelopes containing your references Personal record form
2 copies of your degree and/or professional certificates GMAT and IELTS or TOEFL scores, where appropriate.

The address at the top of the application form is:
MBA Admissions Cranfield School of Management Cranfield,
Bedford, England, MK43 0AL

Is it possible to work part time while studying?

Working whilst studying is simply NOT possible. The lecture contact hours are about 22 per week ( 3 for each of seven subjects in term one). But the total study hours required for reading, learning team work and homework on top of the conatc hours is about 50! The students are flat out just dealing with the workload let alone having time to work

If funding is an issue, ANZ offer a loan scheme to allow people to borrow $50,000 with no repayments for three years at 10% interest which is a great deal. Once in the UK , Cranfield graduates get fast track visa approval to work.

Many students who take out loans to fund their MBA, make arrangement with their first employers post Cranfield to either pay of their loan in part or full.

Can I provide business references with my application? Will that have a negative impact?

We will accept two business references and this will not have a negative impact on your application. A number of candidates have problems obtaining an academic reference due to the time lapsed since they were at University.

What is the composition of the groups that make up the assignment, i.e., professions, ethnicity e.t.c.

Composition of the groups that make up the assignment: during a students time at Cranfield they will be a member of several learning teams. When students arrive they are placed in a learning team for Term 1 the composition of which is determined to achieve maximum diversity that is students are not only drawn from different nationalities and cultures but al industries, qualifications, experiences and values.

In term 2 students change teams but after the observations and feedback on their team performances in Term 1 we can also include factors such as personality type in determining team members.

In Terms 3 and 4 – where students take back control of their learning by choosing from a range of thematic electives – students choose the teams they will join according to the electives chosen and the particular projects they are interested in. In terms 3 and 4 students could be in seven or eight teams.

What opportunity is there to undertake a language study as a joint degree with the Cranfield MBA (within Cranfield’s University) with a focus also on say International Relations or East Asian Studies

Opportunity to undertake a language study as a joint degree with the Cranfield MBA (within Cranfield’s University) with a focus also on say International Relations or East Asian Studies: Cranfield is a business school not a language school.

Cranfield expects students to focus on business subjects. That said students must have a working knowledge of a second language in order to graduate and provides – free of charge – tutoring in second languages for those students who do not have a knowledge of a second language.

Generally students in this position take Spanish or French. In addition Cranfield will facilitate ex curricula – for a charge – lessons in a range of languages for students who already speak more than one language but want to learn more. Costs vary but students can within in reason choose what to study if they are prepared to pay.

Can I do practical work in an area of interest, e.g. IT entrepreneur in India or a non-profit organisation performing reconstruction work in Africa

Practical work in an area of interest, e.g. IT entrepreneur in India or a non-profit organisation performing reconstruction work in Africa.

In Part II of the Programme ie, terms 3 and 4 students can choose to undertake one or occasionally two ‘independent projects’. These are generally undertaken for an external organisation eg, a commercial firm, a charity and can involve overseas travel but in all cases the projects have to be accommodated whilst also studying thematic electives.

In addition all students undertake the International Business Experience. For most students this involves an organised trip to a country – China, India, Japan etc to visit companies but students are offered – and a small number take up – the alternative opportunity to work on a specific project in a developing country eg setting up a small business in Ghana

What types of clubs/societies are available at Cranfield?

Types of clubs/societies available at Cranfield: there are a wide range of clubs/societies ranging from sports to jobs.

Some clubs go on year after year eg, rugby, football, sailing. Others depend on student interest and include a drama club and every year the students form a band. As regards their studies there is an entrepreneurial society, a corporate responsibility society and a range of clubs dealing with industrial sectors eg, finance.

These industrial clubs are driven by the students and will vary from year to year.

I had planned to apply for the scholarship this year, but am finding due to other constraints (family / financial/ work ) that I will now need to apply next year instead. Will this disadvantage my chances for winning the scholarship?

We understand entirely that getting things lined up to go overseas for a year to study is major logistical issue. People have financial commitments, spouses, often young children, work projects etc which are all part of their lives and it takes time to make all the necessary arrangements. That’s why we keep track of where people are and what year they think they may apply. If you need to change it, just email us and we will move you to a later year.

In terms in likelihood of winning the scholarship, possibly it may be the case that as the number of applicants grow in future years, then you will be competing to win the scholarship amongst a larger pool.

But as we are only in the early years of offering the scholarship, it is difficult to say for certain that this will be the case. However, it is the desire of the alumni to fund more than one scholarship in the future years. So there may be more scholarship places on offer.

As one of the 2007 finalist had his 40th birthday at Cranfield, neither is age a disadvantaging factor.

So our advice is, take the time you need to get your life organised, so that you (and family) can go, ready to throw yourself into the experience and get the maximum out of it. If this means you delay your application one or more times - then that’s fine.

ABOUT CRANFIELD AUSTRALIAN ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP

The Australian Alumni Cranfield Scholarship is distinctively different from other scholarships available to Australians for overseas study. It is the only scholarship in Australia which is focused on identifying future business leaders and entrepreneurs and providing them with a unique opportunity to accelerate their development.

This Scholarship targets potential students who have experienced several successful years within the work force, unlike all other notable scholarships in Australia that focus on post-graduate academic research or have a low age cutoff for eligibility and require an undergraduate degree.

Visit Robert’s (2008 Scholarship Winner - Australia) blog to read about his MBA experience at Cranfield.

McFARLANE BACKS VALUE OF MBA

A Master of Business Administration can help you up the ladder but is not a prerequisite to a stellar career, if Australia’s corporate top dogs are anything to go by. However, ANZ Banking group chief executive John McFarlane argues his MBA allowed him to change industries and triple his salary upon graduating. ©The Australian Financial Review 14/08/06 – page 29/34

Why choose Cranfield

From an Australian perspective - why chose Cranfield?

Distance

If you are going to spend at least 12 months of your life getting an MBA then you may as well get a good one. Having to travel that extra mile (or 11,000 miles from Australia in this case) to get it should not be an issue – assuming you have the right reasons for wanting to study

Quality

The Cranfield MBA is consistently ranked higher than the Australian MBAs.

Price

When you do your price comparisons you’ll find out that MBA prices vary widely. At AUD $68,750 for the full time MBA, the Cranfield MBA is priced competitively against the other MBA institutions. MBA fees vary and are currently around AUD $50,000. So even without the Cranfield Australian Alumni Scholarship, studying at Cranfield can make a lot of sense to the right special person. In addition, the beauty of the Cranfield Australian Alumni Scholarship is that the winner will be able to benefit from the course at a significantly reduced personal financial cost. The Cranfield Salary Survey data shows that increases of 36%-372% in salary for MBA are achievable.

Reusable

Employers recognise that a Cranfield MBA is a quality program.

Skills in Demand

MBA graduates have greater access to more of the type of jobs that they want and in many cases can command significant salary increases.

Senior Roles

The additional skills will lead you, if you are so inclined, to some very senior job roles – CEOs and very senior manaers of multi-million dollar international companies.

Past Cranfield MBA Alumni have held senior positions at:

ANZ Banking Group
PBL
and others

Rarity Value

In the whole of Australia you will be one of a limited and small number of people qualified with an international, high quality, MBA. You will be one of an elite few.

Personal Development

The MBA course content handles the usual basics to be expected from a masters course and adds a fine blend of “eye opening”, “influential” and “at times life changing” personal development. Many Cranfield Alumni will tell you that their time at Cranfield was very influential on their personal development, so that when they left Cranfield they were able to successfully take on new challenges.

Network

The value of gaining like-minded friends and associates is immense. You are very likely to develop some very close friendships which last many years – some MBAs have actually married each other. The Cranfield name will allow you to join the world-wide network which will give you access to a wide range of like minded individuals. The Australian Alumni comprises a mix of Australians who have returned home, as well as individuals from Overseas who have “seen the light” and made Australia their home.

Location

Cranfield University is situated just 75km northwest of London in the British countryside. It has easy access by road M1, rail from nearby Milton Keynes and has a local airstrip for those who want to fly in!
